A really artful 1980’s vintage Azilal rug rich in African influence and naive tribal motifs. This Berber rug is a stunning example of tribal folk art. Handwoven in natural sheep’s wool, its colourful abstract motifs are inspired by African tribal culture with its red, green and black colour palette.

This Azilal rug features a variety of tribal markings that clearly denote certain events in the weaver’s own story. The abstract and naive frog symbols (to the end without tassels) typically represent fertility or childbirth (either recent or imminent). While the diamonds are widely used by Berber tribes as a symbol for an ‘eye’ – protection against the evil eye. The snakes and fish skeletons, the almost arrow-like symbols, towards the tassel end and along the sides were used to represent holy, magical or medicinal elements. An absolutely stunning and communicative piece of Berber story telling through woven art.

To this day, Berber tribal art continues to be influenced by African culture, much as it was in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. We absolutely love pieces like this that really celebrate the rich culture of the Berber tribes and that African influence. An incredibly handsome tribal rug.
