Very fine, pileless, Ait Ouaouzguit Kilim (Hanbel) wool rug from Morocco. Its design is absolutely incredible and very clever indeed. An ombre wave-like pattern covers the whole piece with 3 main bands of colour, each entwined with varying shades of denim blue (from the darkest through to a faded, washed light blue).

These colourful bands undulate from darkest brown to lighter, natural brown on to darker reddish tones then through to a soft, faded sage green. The overall effect is seamless rather than blocky, which demonstrates the weaver’s artistry and incredible technical skill.

Ait Ouaouzguit is a tribal area within the vast Siroua mountain range (south-west of Ouarzazate, High Atlas, Southern Morocco) and the historic home to Berber tribes whose economy is primarily farming. They are best known for their indigenous sheep breed, the Siroua sheep. This heritage breed is largely renowned for its smooth, long hair fleece typically in pure white or black.

The quality of this wool is unparalleled. Consequently, Berber women in the tribes of the Ait Ouaouzguit region are respected throughout Morocco and the rest of the world for their superior quality handwoven wool rugs and carpets.

This is a brand new, contemporary Moroccan rug handwoven by artisan techniques. Each one is produced by using a simple knotting technique, which is a lengthy process but results in a very high quality and durable rug designed to last for many decades.
