Contemporary Ait Ouaouzguit Kilim (Hanbel) wool rug features a wave-like pattern reminiscent of vintage Japanese denim. These denim blue waves undulate from soft faded tones to one end through darker bands and then on to more washed out natural denim. Denim blue oblong checks run along each edge giving it an edgy modern twist on an otherwise vintage looking piece.

The design is actually an incredible optical illusion. The weaver’s use of different tones of blue in variable widths that contrast with a natural greyish tones trick the eye into a mesmerising aged effect image. A true testament to the female weaver’s masterful technical skill and overall expressive vision.

Ait Ouaouzguit is a tribal area within the vast Siroua mountain range (south-west of Ouarzazate, High Atlas, Southern Morocco) and the historic home to Berber tribes whose economy is primarily farming. They are best known for their indigenous sheep breed, the Siroua sheep. This heritage breed is largely renowned for its smooth, long hair fleece typically in pure white or black.

The quality of this wool is unparalleled. Consequently, Berber women in the tribes of the Ait Ouaouzguit region are respected throughout Morocco and the rest of the world for their superior quality handwoven wool rugs and carpets.

This is a brand new, contemporary Moroccan rug handwoven by artisan techniques. Each one is produced by using a simple knotting technique, which is a lengthy process but results in a very high quality and durable rug designed to last for many decades.
