RARE LISTING. Part of a mismatched pair!

Very rare, vintage 1970’s Moroccan Boujad rug, one of a mismatched pair (see Boujad 326 also), with an unusual colour palette and exquisite design. Handwoven by Moroccan tribeswomen, this Berber rug is one of two very unique tribal rugs, which sit beside each other to tell their story as one.

It’s almost impossible to get a pair of vintage Moroccan rugs, created by the same weaver from the same home (although we do have a mismatched pair of vintage Beni Ouarain rugs too). These pieces were created for domestic use in their own home, they were never intended for the tourist trade. The abstract tribal motifs tell a story unique to the individual weaver.

This vintage Boujad rug has mottled tones of pink and blue with sporadic bands of faded tangerine, sage green and smokey mauve. Its main design motifs are two large, abstract diamonds (widely believed to symbolise the warding off of evil spirits) surrounded by smaller diamonds and two abstract, horned tribal motifs. Perhaps the weaver is depicting her desire for protection over the tribe’s cattle?

The bohemian colour palette juxtaposed with a striking, strong tribal design message create a truly wonderful piece of Berber weaving. Highly collectible!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR BUYER: We would really love these to go as they were created and intended to be – together (as a pair) to the same house. This is an incredible opportunity to acquire some very special Moroccan folk art.
