Vintage Azilal Moroccan Tribal Rugs

Vintage tribal rugs from Berber tribes of the Azilal province in Morocco are rare. These rugs were almost unknown to the market until the late 1990's. Their wool tends to be finer, producing a lustrous almost cloth-like covering. Moroccan Azilal rugs feature simplistic geometric shapes and abstract tribal motifs and patterns with dashes of vibrant colours – nearly always on a cream background. Pieces on coloured background are relatively uncommon so draw their own niche of collectors.

Azilal rugs have become a popular – more colourful – alternative to the more minimalist monochrome Beni Ouarain rugs. Similarly, genuine vintage pieces are increasingly hard to find, they are amongst the most highly sought after Berber tribal rugs.
